RUDOW, EARLY SUNDAY MORNING, APRIL 22

The Army installation went on high alert. Soldiers were roused in the barracks in the middle of the night and told to report to duty. Somebody shook Gene Bialas awake. “Get up—they found it!”

Some of the troops had little or no idea what “it” was, as they had never been briefed on the project. They quickly learned. “I remember a staff sergeant coming around and saying what had happened and what the tunnel was,” said Russ Knapp, one of the radar station ELINT operators, who had been kept out of the project but had guessed some kind of tunnel was involved.

The compound roiled with tension and excitement. “All hell broke loose in the warehouse,” according to Bill Romey, the CIA linguist. “Guns were brought out in case any attempts were made to cross the border to our station.”

“Rumors abounded, some of which were absurd, but nonetheless, just barely believable,” recalled Knapp. One was that MPs at the site “were assigned the task of ending human evidence of the tunnel enterprise by shooting all of the enlisted men that had been directly involved.”

Bialas got his gear on and rushed down to the tunnel. Soldiers built a makeshift barrier below the sector border, using sandbags removed from the side of the tunnel, along with a few strands of barbed wire. A second, more formidable coil was put up closer to the warehouse.

Warnings were hurriedly scribbled in German and Russian in black ink on cardboard signs and hung on the barbed wire. YOU ARE ENTERING THE AMERICAN SECTOR, read the one at the barrier. PROPERTY OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, read the second sign. NO ENTRY.
